Handyman Hacks | 10 Things You Should Be Cleaning But Aren't

10 Things you should be cleaning but aren't

Spring is right around the corner, and what better way to spend those snowy, cooped‑up days than getting your home ready for that fresh, open‑window feeling we all crave after winter. While most people focus on the usual spring‑cleaning checklist—floors, closets, and countertops—there are plenty of overlooked household items quietly collecting dust, germs, and grime. Give your home a true refresh by tackling these unexpected things you didn’t know you should be cleaning.

Light Switch

These high‑touch surfaces are some of the germiest spots in your home.

HANDYMAN HACK

Hot, soapy water works wonders on fingerprints and grime—especially when paired with a microfiber cloth.

Ceiling Fan

You know the feeling—you avoid turning on the fan because a wall of dust is sitting on top of the blades.

HANDYMAN HACK

Spray the tops of the blades with a multipurpose cleaner, then slide a pillowcase over each blade to trap the dust inside before tossing it in the wash.

Room With Baseboards

No one loves this chore, especially when it requires kneeling or climbing a step stool.

HANDYMAN HACK

Use a microfiber spin mop with a fresh mop head to tackle hard‑to‑reach baseboards and trim. Wring the mop out until it’s almost dry, then glide it along the surface to lift dust and grime.

Shower Curtain

Mildew and soap scum build up faster than you think.

HANDYMAN HACK

Toss fabric curtains in the washing machine with a few towels to help scrub them clean. Replace or refresh your plastic liner every six months.

return vent

Vent covers collect dust, pet hair, and debris—especially during winter months.

HANDYMAN HACK

Remove the covers and vacuum the visible dust around the opening. For a deeper clean, soak the covers in warm, soapy water for 10–15 minutes, scrub with a soft brush, rinse, and let them dry completely before reinstalling.

Shop Now
Dryer Vent

Lint buildup restricts airflow, slows drying time, increases energy use, and raises the risk of dryer‑related fires.

HANDYMAN HACK

Disconnect the dryer, then run a dryer‑vent brush through the hose to loosen compacted lint.

Shop Now
hanging light fixture

Complex light fixtures can be time‑consuming to clean, especially when they have lots of crystals or intricate details.

HANDYMAN HACK

Use a spray‑on chandelier cleaner—just spray and let the grime drip off onto a towel below.

Shop Now
under bathroom sink

The P‑trap under your sink catches hair, soap scum, toothpaste, and grease. When it gets clogged, you’ll notice slow draining or unpleasant odors.

HANDYMAN HACK

• Place a bucket under the pipe to catch water and debris.
• Loosen the slip nuts on both sides of the curved section.
• Remove the P‑trap and dump the gunk into the bucket.
• Rinse with warm water and scrub if needed before reassembling.

Air Filter

A dirty air filter can fill your home with dust and strain your HVAC system.

HANDYMAN HACK

Choose a high‑quality allergen filter to trap dust, pollen, and airborne particles before they circulate through your home.

Washing Machine

Residue, detergent buildup, and odors can accumulate inside the drum.

HANDYMAN HACK

Run a hot cycle with vinegar or a washing‑machine cleaner once a month to keep it fresh and functioning properly.

By adding these overlooked items to your cleaning routine, you’ll create a home that feels lighter, fresher, and truly ready for the season ahead.
